Each year thousands of schools in the United States participate in the National Geographic Bee using materials prepared by the National Geographic Society. The contest is designed to motivate students to learn about the world and how it works. All Hopkins Junior High Students will have the opportunity to participate in the preliminary round of the National Geographic Bee on Monday, January 8, 2018 in their history class. The top 10 school winners will advance to the Hopkins Finals Competition on Monday, January 22, 2018 at 2:45. The final competition consists of a final round and a championship round. The final round will reduce the number of contestants to two. These two finalists then compete in the championship round to determine the school champion. The school champion will then take an additional exam to see if the qualify for the state competition. The date of that qualifying exam will be determined later. As many as 100 of the highest-scoring students in a state or territory advance to the state competition. The state Bee champion advances to the national championship in Washington, D.C.

Many companies have matching donations to the schools that match either dollars donated or volunteer hours. One of the companies that matches is Google via Benevity Impact Fund. Here at Hopkins, we are finally doing this via online deposit. When completing the form for matching donations, please make sure that the organization is FUSD (Fremont Unified School District) and the project name is Hopkins Junior High so that these funds will be deposited into our school account.
We thank you so much for your continued support. These funds help our classrooms continually keep up to date with enhancements in technology, books, supplies etc.

Science Olympiad allows a school to field up to 3 teams. As agreed upon last year Hopkins will have one team remain in place for consistency and mentoring purposes year to year.
This means we will have two more teams (if we are able to get parent coaches) that will be made up of 15 students each. A test and lottery will determine which 30 students are part of the teams.
At this point I am looking for parents interested in coaching a team.

Dear Parent/Guardian,
I hope the First Day of School went well for you and your family. We are excited to start the school year and are looking forward to the coming months. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or issues so far.
As I’m sure you are aware, an Excessive Heat Advisory has been declared throughout the Bay Area for today and tomorrow. The safety of your children while on our campus is always priority number one among our staff. We are looking at a number of ways to deal with the weather including limiting outdoor activity to shady/covered areas, indoor, low-impact PE classes, and encouraging students to drink plenty of water during the day. Hydration is crucial during this time so please consider a few extra glasses of water this evening and before school tomorrow morning.
For those of you with children participating in Fall Sports games or practices, we are in contact with the California Interscholastic Federation regarding options for conducting practices and games in the safest conditions possible. Practices for Friday and Saturday have been cancelled and adjustments to games scheduled for those days will be made to account for the heat.
We appreciate your cooperation and support as we kick off the school year and work through these temporary high temperatures. Please call the front office with any concerns.
Sincerely,
Principal, Brown

Hello Hawknation,
A big shout out and thank you to our PFA team of volunteers that was out in force to help direct traffic this morning. A few early reminders as we kick off the year...Our website is full of information (lunch, bell schedules, calendar, daily bulletin).
1.) Lunch drop off. Please use the visitor parking lot (near the portables) and drop lunch off in the cart and then leave campus. We recommend sending a lunch with students or purchasing here at school to maximize their lunch time.
2.) The morning drop off went well. Please remember the main loop of the school is not open for student drop off. The horseshoe loop to the west of the school (towards Paseo Padre) is your best and safest bet. Please remember to pull up all the way on Driscoll Blvd if dropping off along the curb. The volunteers love smiles and waves. Take your time. Be safe!
3.) Afternoon pick up. There is no parking in the RED BUS ZONE after school. This is considered and active loading zone and fines double if your are in this space. Once the buses leave we stop monitoring this section and you can pick up along the curb. Students may not get into your car while you are in the middle of a lane. Again use the horseshoe loop or park across the street from the school.
4.) Please register on School Loop (click login from the homepage of our website)
Lastly, thank you for partnering with us in the education of your kids. It is our pleasure and honor. Please call or email the office if you have any questions.

Safely Viewing the Solar Eclipse
Monday, August 21st, a partial eclipse will be visible in every state in the U.S. and a total solar eclipse, which is when the Moon completely covers the Sun, will occur across 14 states along a 70-mile-wide swath of the country. If you are NOT on the path of Totality during the Solar Eclipse, you may be tempted to look at the sun during this event. You cannot safely look at any of it, not even for a minute. You need eye protection. Permanent eye damage can result from looking straight at the sun- even for as little as 30 seconds. Using binoculars or an unfiltered telescope to directly view the sun is even more dangerous and can cause permanent blindness in just a second or two.
Click this link for more information about safely viewing the Solar Eclipse.
NASA recommends that people who plan to view the eclipse should check the safety authenticity of viewing glasses to ensure they meet basic proper safety viewing standards.
Eclipse viewing glasses and handheld solar viewers should meet all the following criteria:
· Have certification information with a designated ISO 12312-2 international standard
· Have the manufacturer’s name and address printed somewhere on the product
· Not be used if they are older than three years, or have scratched or wrinkled lenses
· Not use homemade filters
· Ordinary sunglasses -- even very dark ones -- should not be used as a replacement for eclipse viewing glasses or handheld solar viewers

At this time there is NO plan to change 8th grade promotion. This is a PFA event that will need your support with volunteer time and donations. Your promotion donation covers two main events for 8th graders. The bulk of the money helps to pay for the promotion party for students. The remainder is for decorations and rentals for the formal stage promotion ceremony. Neither of these events can happen without your help.
Survey results from both students and parents showed an interest in keeping the promotion ceremony.
Thank you,

Dear Hopkins Families,
It is with a heavy heart that I share with you the passing of one of our long time teachers. Ms. Ronna Claymon, Spanish teacher and Department Chair of Electives passed away over the weekend.
Over her 35 year career she taught, tutored, and mentored thousands of students. Some of you may have had the privilege of being in her class. Many of you may have had siblings or relatives that came in contact with Ms. Claymon over the years and there are certainly many students attending Mission San Jose High school that were in her class. Know that Hopkins is here for you.
For some of our students, this may be their first encounter with someone who passed away. I encourage you to share this news with your student and talk to them about their thoughts and feelings associated with Ms. Claymon. As we approach the beginning of school, we will make every effort to maintain regular classroom instruction and we will also provide support to those students who need someone to talk to. At the start of the year, I will communicate to my staff an action plan on how we will respond to the needs of our students who may need additional support.
This loss has been a shock to the entire staff (and community) and we are all grieving. Your kind thoughts are appreciated at this time.
When information regarding a memorial service becomes available I will be sure to share it with you. This community has always been able to band together during tough times. It will be needed in the coming days. If there is anything Mrs. Moore or I can do to help you--please let us know.
On behalf of the entire Hopkins staff we wish to share our deepest condolences.

March 2017
Dear Parent/Guardian
On February 8th, the FUSD Board of Education adopted a Student Safety Resolution stating that all Fremont students are entitled to a public education, regardless of their parents’ actual or perceived national origin, citizenship, or immigration status.
This resolution re-affirms the Fremont Unified School District’s Stance against discrimination, bullying and harassment in and out of the classroom. Fremont Unified is committed to the success of all students, irrespective of their ability, beliefs, ethnicity, gender identification, immigration status, sexual orientation, or socio-economic status. A copy of the Resolution is available at http://bit.ly/FUSDStudentSafety.
Every student has the right to attend school in a safe and secure environment. Our district, schools and community have an obligation to promote a mutual respect that supports dignity and equality. To that end, Fremont Unified has policies, procedures and practices in place that are designed to reduce and eliminate discrimination and harassment, as well as to quickly address incidents when they occur.
I encourage any student who believes they have been subjected to any form of harassment, including acts based on race, color, or national origin, by District staff, students, or a third-party, to contact a school administrator. All reports will be taken very seriously and investigated thoroughly.
By working together to respect and embrace the diversity that makes Fremont such a unique and special community, every student will receive the educational opportunity they deserve.
Sincerely,
Dr. Jim Morris
Superintendent
